In the past three days my car started to grind third something fierce. I mean every once and a while at the track the car wouldn't let me put it into third so I figured that my 3rd gear syncro was going bad, but I have never heard of one just up and going bad without much warning. it doesn't grind if i drive like grandma or if i hit the rpm's just right. I just put in a mixture of GM Syncromesh Friction Mod. and Penziol Syncromesh and it helped a little. I was thinking that maybe my clutch had something to do with it seeing as though it has been showing tell tale signs of wear but if it was the clutch it would be happening in all gears.?. I don't have the money to purchase a new tranny at the moment so i really need help. I am pretty knowledgable about engines but i am rather new to transmissions and i really need help on this one.
thank you in advance

come on, i know someone has the ability to help me with this
Start saving your money, as this is going to cost a bit.
You figured correctly, your 3rd gear synchro is hosed. How that gets fixed is up to you and you wallet. For now, stop racing and double clutch going into 3rd gear. When mine went I babied it until I saved enough to have a new one put in.
I ended up going with a new ITR tranny for $1700.
Cheers,
Roy

Sounds like your occasional grinding into third at the track was your warning! Yeah, i would baby it till you can afford to get it fixed, or get another tranny! It would be cheaper to fix the one you have though!

Just remember, the third gear synchro almost always goes first, this is the case in just about all Honda tranny's.
ok well i kinda figured that i will have to either fix the syncro's or just buy another tranny because i hate these ratios anyways. does anybody know a cheap place to buy a hydro to cable conversion. i might be able to get a cable b16 tranny for really cheap (in fact for less than a new set of syncros) and also after i get a new tranny i will sell mine for dirt cheap help me out on this one please

why would you mix the gm synchromesh with something else? just put in pure gm synchro fric. modified and youll be good to go... i had horrible 3rd and 4th gear grinds, even when i granny shifted it grinded like a ****, i put in this stuff, and its gone...
Mad Scientist
Try using full GM synchromesh, its great stuff; if that dont cover the grinding for a while your synchro is done anyways..
I would defenetely not downgrade to a cable tranny...

Why not? I did and with the cable to hydro conversion, I love it.
You can just go and buy another S1 if you'd like, but remember, it's bearings and synchros are probably almost as tired as the ones in your current transmission, that's why I opted to rebuild instead of buy a new one.

You sayd it, also cable internals are weaker.
