good tranny?
How would you tell if a tranny is good or not without turning the car on and or opening it up? If you can't, and have to open it up, what do you look for besides shavings in the oil aswell as gears grinded down? I'm thinking about picking up a tranny at a junk yard. Thanks guys for your help.
Noisy bearings, wear on the shift forks where they contact the synchro sleeves, significantly deformed or missing teeth on synchro rings, sleeves, and dog teeth, missing or damaged teeth on gears, ease of spinning, total transfer of torque from mainshaft to differential output shafts, large amounts of mainshaft radial/axial play, cracks in the casing, and damaged threads or bolt holes on the casing.
