Default Gearing on ls..improvement?

My setup currently is a hydro ls tranny. I have looked at gear calcs but probably looking for experienced advice. A recent aquirement scored me a b16 cusco lsd(also correct for ls according to cusco) and it came with a 4.4 final drive which would basically give me gsr 1+2 and more econo 3-5. Where my question comes in is that I was thinking on maybe an Mfactory 4.7 or 4.9 to make it more aggressive. Is this reasoning seem ok. Feedback please..(I really want to avoid a new tranny).

Your RPM's will be higher at ____MPH than what it is right now with a 4.7 or even higher with a 4.9 Since you are running an LS trans...it won't be that bad vs. someone with a Type R or B16 gear stack. Then again...its a Honda..they love the RPM's!

Thanks gearspeed. I am doing all motor ls/v. Is there anything else I should know b4 getting into this. What differential bearings to I need the LS?..my lsd did not come with these. Also the lsd (cusco type mz) had about 5000 miles on it should it be ok or do I need a rebuild kit. So are you recommending the 4.9 vs 4.7 for more rpm.
I was also hoping for a bense chime as this stuff seems his forte.

I would work with the 4.7 first. I am sure that will be sufficient. You will use the same bearings that were in the case that you are using.

Nah...that would cost too much. If you have an LS...that involves changing the Sleeve(for 3-4), Fork(for 3-4) and six gears to make that happen. The cost would be almost $900 retail and then you still have the 4.27 FD to deal with.

Just get a good B16 like mentioned above...if you can find one.

I run a jdm ys1 b16 box with the short final drive and while its great when you want to move, driving at 4700 rpm at 60 is not exactly fun, just something to think about. OT good to see some more mn people here.

Which final are you running? I may just throw the 4.4 I got with my lsd, until I can save for something more. I could do a different final but Bense is right, the ls with a 4.7 would give basically a b16 1st and second and taller than b16 yet 3-5. The 4.9 seems interesting though with a shorter 1+2 vs b16 but still slightly taller3-5. I know the hondas love revs but thinking back to gran turismo if you have the power doesnt it make sense for a slighty taller "freeway gears" not just 5th for economy.

I have the stock final in there, i think its a 4.7, mine is a cable though, i would seriously try the 4.4 before you change it and see how you like it. Longer gears are only for fuel economy and despite what you might still hear in the 92-95 thread shorter is always faster. That said you may find 4.4 is just right I love mine and initally thought i wanted shorter but after driving it for a year I like it just how it is.

The 4.4 is what I am going to do for the mean time, may have to eventually just pony up for 98+ typeR sometime and be done with it, decisions. You must be part of mnsportcompact too (anti theft militia). I am not on there but I did go to the last dyno day to check it out , with cooperdude.
