Now you could design another gearset with the same diameters. But tiny little teeth, 200 teeth & 400 teeth. Same gear ratio, same diameters, same shaft spacing.

Then you can design another gearset with 20 & 40 teeth but different diameters. Now you get the same gear ratio but the shaft spacing is different.

You can't always mix & match because the gear teeth have to mesh together with each other. On a bike it's easy because ALL the gears are made to mesh with the same chain. None of those gears mesh directly with each other.

 

okay, so just the number of teeth is what make up the ratio, nothing else? (in other words, no acceleration is gained by changing the diameter of the gear if it has that same exact number of teeth as the old gear?

Sorta... The gear ratio is determined only by the # of teeth. Beyond that, the diameters determine the shaft spacing. The size & shape of the teeth just determines which gears are able to mesh with each other.

If you change diameter but keep the same # of teeth, that means the teeth HAVE to be bigger. Then they won't mesh with the other gear, so you have to make the other gear bigger to mate with it. That screws up the shaft spacing.

 

I see. But as long as they have the same amount of teeth, the gear ratio will be the same, so no acceleration difference, correct?

lets take your bicycle analogy for example

when you chenge the number of teeth you are actually changing the DIAMETER of one or both of the sprockets. The teeht are only there to keep the chain on a consistant and even path......same principal as the gear. The gear has teeth that have the correct pitch and diameter to mesh properly with each other. The "ratio" is the equation between the two gear diameters....the teeth are only there to mesh and keep in time with each other. Lets use teh analogy that I used the day that I was originally explaining it to you........remember this one........take a shop fan that uses a v-belt pulley system. If you make the larger of the two pullies smaller the fan will spin faster and if you make the smaller pulley larger it will spin slower.....get my point here....teh teeth are only the meshing equation that makes the ratio compatible.

it is really hard to explain gear dynamics.....you have to take measurements and get tooth pitch measurements to fully understand.

I will have to take you to my uncle's machine shop and physically show you what I am talking about the next time I am back in Charleston.

in this case, the terms are interchangeable - as long as you assume that the teeth are the same size to be able to mesh, simply because, as long as the designers have any common sense, the two measurements will be proportional. as a matter of fact, if anyone here is wrong, it's dirtysol. imagine a gear that is 3ft in diameter and only has 4 teeth on it. when it turns next to a gear with 16teeth, it will turn the 16 tooth gear 1/4 of a turn per its own revolution. now let's take a gear that's 3 inches in diameter, with 4 teeth, spinning next to the same 16 tooth gear. per one revolution of the 4 tooth gear, how many revolutions will the 16tooth gear turn? 1/4th.

all you did was explain that the gear size is proportional. yes if you take a 1/4 scale version of eace gear it will have the same ratio. basically what you said is if you have a 4ft diameter gear and a 1ft diameter gear that it would have the same ratio as a 1ft diameter gear and a 3inch diameter

what I was saying that if the gears have the same tooth pitch as each other but instead of proportionallyt changing teh diameter, instead just change the diameter of the two and you would have a different ratio

4' and a 1' would have a 4:1 ratio

but if you changed the diameter to something like
4' and 6" it would have a 8:1 ratio.....by dividing the variable in half you have just multiplied the ratio by two

now do you get it

If the gears are to actually work, then dividing the tooth counts or diameters will both arrive you at the same number. In fact, the diameters vary slightly due to machining imperfections, so dividing the teeth counts will actually net you the EXACT gear ratio.

I have actually manufactured gears at my uncle's machine shop and at one of my previous jobs (Getrag....the sole manufacturer of gears for Diamler Chrysler )

I have had to make/design gears to have a certain ratio within a certain space......and FYI the diameter if the teeth itself is not where you measure, it is where the teeth actually mesh is where you measure

I am not going to try to explain this to the unexperienced because there is a LOT and I mean a LOT more in gear design than I could explain without confusing the **** out of you because I am not very good at conveying points

 

WTF if u worked at such a huge company and they relied on you so much to cut gears, why did u leave?

And how did you get such a great job cutting gears for a huge corporation without going to school?

I barely got a job at RadioShack when I got out of HS.

I got a job at Getrag because my Uncle Paul used to be shop foreman at a custom tap and die company that used to do a lot of work for them. They did not rely on me because they had more experienced employees but I have been through the design process and manufacturing process. I quit because Getrag is a horrible company to work for and I am what you call a career student......I love new experiences and I love to learn. every year that I have been out of high school I have spent at least half of it in college (three years now).

BTW: Getrag sucks *****

 

Getrag sucks? Obviously if they are the sole manufacturer of gears for Daimler Chrysler they don't suck.

I actually have spent the past three years going to college on a regular basis and I already have an associates in business, the only reason why I said "at least half" is because WHEN MY MOTHER DIED I took a few months off from everything. I am sorry I am not up to your "wire probing" standards......I understand that you are in the Air Force and I appreciate the fact that you took the initiative to stand up for the country (and believe me, I tried to join the military but my mother messed that one up for me before she died).......I am glad that I am not an "aircraft electronics specialist" because I don't want to work on airplanes, that is not where my heart is.

I think that I am a education addicted individual and any chance I have to learn something new I take it....that is what I call a career/lifelong student. Yes I have been out of high school since 2001 and yes I am have been in College since I got out, and guess wat I will probably end up doing when I get out of WyoTech......I will probably end up going up to Clemson and finishing up my Mechanichal Engineering degree.

and yes Getrag sucks.....not the quality of the components but how they treat their employees does.
