Gear shift does not come out of parking

Gear shift does not come out of parking
93 Honda Accord. Auto Transmission.
After I start the car, the gear-shift lever does not move from Park position! (despite brake pedal fully depressed). I do NOT hear the click that I always hear when I depress the brake pedal (which I think relases the gear stick).
To overcome it temporarily I insert the key in the slot that releases the lever, then move it to Neutral, then start my car and drive. It works fine like this.
After filling gas from a gas-station, this condition developed.
What is wrong? Any help welcome.
