gaining Oil?
my oil looked over yesterday so today i decided to leak some out! then later i took it out for a drive probably for 30 minutes! then waited 1 hour and checked the dip stick i gained it all back! first i thought o crap maybe i have a bad head gasket, but im not really seeing any loss of coolant, or white smoke, or milkshake on the dip stick! Maybe its just because its still hot and the oil is expanding! im using mobil 1 full syn 10-30!

Re: gaining Oil? (ejprimo)
check when cold and always check with the car parked in the exact same place. I have checked my car in two different places at the front of my house (within 12 feet of each other...my house is built on what i would call near dead level) and found almost 1/4" difference on the dipstick, but when i moved the car back to the original spot, and let it settle again, i found no difference in levels

Re: gaining Oil? (G3gsr)
Oil splashes all over the place in your engine. It has nooks and crannies. Check it when it had sufficient time to cool down both times..

If gasoline is getting into the oil then the oil would smell like gas. (G3GSR: Does it?) In any case, having the oil analyzed will certainly show whether this is happening.
But if it keeps 'gaining' oil, there's not many places for it to come from. Coolant getting in there will be obvious because it looks so much different.

Sure, if you're running too rich the extra fuel will cling to the (relatively) cool cylinder walls and get past the rings and into the crankcase. If your oil level is going up really fast then it must be running extremely rich. You could pull your plugs and look for black, sooty deposits on them or have someone stick a sniffer in the tailpipe and see how much CO its putting out.
One thing is for certain: some fluid is getting into your oil. If you are not losing coolant then really the only other thing it could be is fuel.
