Funny rattling noise coming from drivetrain
1998 Honda Civic EX 5SPD 2DR with 98XXX miles
A couple months ago I noticed a rather loud noise at 4000 rpm that would only be there for a second or two. It happened in every gear even reverse. Starting in first and accelerating through 6K rpm, it sounded like something rattling in the transmission. Now this didn't happen any other time, but only at 4K.
After driving that way for awhile, a month or so, the noise went away. Now the so called 'rattling' is there all the time, but not as loud as before at 4K. When it happened at 4K, you could hear it clear as day even with your radio up loud. Now the 'rattling' is faint, but still noticeable. Happens in every gear and throughout the rpm band, getting a little louder around 2500k but fainting shortly after.
The rattling goes away while driving down a road when I push in the clutch, but also happens when I sit in neutral and rev the car.
Note: This is my everyday street car, but occassionally have taken it to the track. My current setup consists of a stock clutch (replaced and flywheel balanced March 2003), 75 shot of nitrous, and nothing else that would pertain to track use.
Any suggestions are highly appreciated. Thanks

Probably not an input shaft bearing as that sounds like a whining noise. Maybe the clutch plate springs (not the pressure plate fingers).
would it be wise just to order an aftermarket clutch kit or do you think thats unrelated to my problem? i'm not a big tech head, so bear with me
Completely flushed the transmission fluid and put in Honda Genuine MTF. The noise seems to be alot quieter to the point where it doesn't exist, but occassionally, the noise comes back where you can hear it.
Any suggestions? I'm starting to think the problem lies inside the tranny rather than the clutch disc, flywheel, and pressure plate...

In the last resort, you can always drop the transmission and check inside for abnormal wear (or better yet, pull the drain plug and check the magnetic end for excess shaving buildup). Then just refill the fuild.
On a side note, I had a small mishap and built up about 1/8 of shavings on that magnet in a week. Needless to say, there was defnitely a problem.

Well the noise is back to where it was a couple weeks ago; very loud. When I flushed the tranny a couple days ago I didnt notice any shavings on the drain plug??? Any suggestions?
