Default Fuel pump question/problem

I installed a walbro fuel pump into my car and used the new filter thing it came with. I noticed that it was shorter than my stock one. I now run out of gas with like 3-5 gallons left.. I'm pretty sure it's just because it doesn't reach down as far. Any objections to using a fuel hose tubing to extend it to reach down further?? Will it cause it to not be able to suck up fuel, i guess it would be more like an inline fuel pump?
Thanks.

Mount your stock strainer on the fuel pump. TRUST ME... easiest way to fix it.

ok, well actually I did this and now I run out with about 2 gallons left. Anything wrong with extending it?
