Default Flywheels

I'm investing in an ACT clutch for my hybrid. I've got a 2000 Accord with an H22 swapped. I'm getting the HA3-XTSS clutch kit. My dilema is that I want to know the benefits of installing an aftermarket flywheel as well since I'll have my transmission removed to do this clutch change in the first place, is it really worth spending $350 for a lightweight flywheel? I've heard it reduces the weight of the car, but it also decreases torque. Can anyone inform me in the difference between a stock flywheel and a light weight?

info is appreciated.

all depends on the flywheel that you choose, many are out there if getting a act clutch i would reomend getting a act flywheel, 2 choices the prolite or streetlite.

one is 8lbs and one is 11

the streetlite (11lbs) is going to be your more heavier flywheel than the prolite, but much lighter than stock.

the prolite is going to be your lightest of the act xtreme line up of flywheels lighter than the streetlight and ALOT lighter than OEM

a lightweight flywheel will lower rotation mass in your drivetrain/ transmission thus removing weight on the overall motor and car, and letting the rotation mass spin faster giving quicker rev

depending on your future modifications will depend on what flywheel is good for you, most people stay in the 11-12lbs range, it lightens up the rotation mass enough to notice over stock but not extremely quicker rev over stock ( but definitly quicker over stock)

the 7.5-8.5lbs range is a definitly bigger jump from oem to 7.5-8.5 ALOT lighter making revs alot faster and reducing more weight overall than the streetlite and the OEM flywheel.

i had a exedy racing flywheel in my LS, and you could definitly feel the difference from oem to the exedy, overall at WOT through the gears it was ALOT faster reving, ALOT faster shifting (i had the s1 b16a tranny) just a greater overall feel of the car. the exedy was 9lbs

the problem some people face with heavy duty or xtreme pressure plates along with really light flywheels, is the daily driving expierence is or can be alot harder giving your clutch assembly is no longer stock, giving harsher engaugments and quicker revs making it harder to drive in everyday situations. now this isnt everyone who expierences this, mainly people who go with like xtreme pressure plate and puck clutches.......

lossing torque isnt a big problem as you dont loose much that you can really notice.

think of it this way. you are loosing weight in the rotation mass assembly one of the best ways to improve your overall performance and rev thus making all of your other permance modifications benifiting from the upgraded flywheel.

it is definitly worth the money for the flywheel, eap since you are already going to be doing the clutch upgrade anyway

Use an exedy stg1 clutch in combination with a prolite flywheel. I've got that on my z6 turbo, and I have only excellent things to say about it. the thing about less torque is bullshit. If you know how to launch; you know how to launch, plain and simple . Let us know what you run in the 1/4, because I'm looking into an accord

I'm considering staying with the stock flywheel because I use the car primarily as my daily driver, and I've read that if it revs up faster, it derevs faster as well, I almost want to wait on my clutch untill I do my hondata and get my fuel injection properly done, right now my car stalls as it is because it's running extremly rich.

I think I might hold off on the flywheel untill I,

A: rebuild the block
B: turbo charge

I've got the clutch kit on the way now, I'm getting a quaife ATB LSD differential and I'm going to dallas to get it hondata'd and tuned. I'll get the feel for it with the stock since I'm already use to it and when I upgrade to turbo I'll probably remove the engine to get everything properly fabricated and mounted. Either that or I'll go ***** deep and send my other H22A USDM (blew a bearing on the crank shaft I think) off to get rebuilt and resleeved with turbo pistons.

I'm probably going to end up regreting the wait on the flywheel later, but I'm going to take it slow on the project, too many changes at once may cause troubleshooting issues I don't want to deal with.

Also, I'm looking at taking it to the strip here shortly just to see how the stock H22A JDM performs on the 1/4 mile. (after all these new installs that is)

P.S. - I've been deployed for 4 1/2 months, so I miss my car, and I'm trying to get back into the tuning mind-set again.

Thanks for all the info and I'll keep you posted on 1/4 mile times.
