Default flywheel problems

I have a friend whos motor sounded like it was knocking, so we took off the oil pan and saw very little metal shavings(look like normal wear). We decided to take everything apart to check the bearings, one main bearing had deep scrathes but the crank had no scratches, looked to be in perfect condition.

The flywheel bolts were all lose. We loosen most of them by hand. You can tell it had some play the flywheel looked as it had been hitting the crank where it mounts. Can this be what we were hearing all along, sounding like a knocking noise? Has anyone ever experience something similar to this?

lol - i'll bump this... i don't ever remember seeing any normal metal-shavings in my oil so i wouldn't rule out 'deep scratches'. and i can't imagine that noise wouldn't be coming from a finger-tight flywheel at 8000 rpms... so i guess i can't help - damn and i wanted to help.

Default Re: flywheel problems (mathusala)

maybe the metal shaving were from that one bearing that was going bad. you said it had deep scratches right.

couldn't the flywheel have been hitting something since it was loose?

if the block was taken apart and nothing major was found besides a worn bearing, what else could have made the noise besides the very loose flywheel?
