Default Flowrates.

Does anyone know of or know were I could get flowrates on a stock B16A head. Preferably a 1st gen? A friend of mine is doing some work on my head and I want some baseline numbers to compare with when I take it to the flowbench when he is done. No, I didn't get it put on the flowbench before hand, my bad!

Also...Does the valvtrain have to be assembled while testing?

It's not the quantity of air...it's the quality of air.

that is rather esoteric.

Yes, it is, however it is very true. You don't care as much with how much air that you move through the head, but how well the head allows the fuel to atomize before going into the combustion chamber, as well as how well the mixture fills up the cylinder...then on the other size you are worried about how well the exhaust gases are removed from the cylinder.

Porting a Honda head envolves much more than most people are aware of, and there are variables that most people don't tend to think of.

This may be a really stupid question but is a head tested on the flowbench with or without the valvtrain? Thanks for the link Maxi, I forgot about that place.

As for quantity vs. quality. Arguments on that can be made either way to a certain extent, but I agree with what you are talking about. Thanks for the info!

Remember that on a flow bench, you are measuring steady flow. But actual flow through a port is pulsatile. Not steady. So velocity comes into play. The faster air is actually moving, the greater its tendency to keep on moving, even when it is not actually being sucked in by a moving piston (ie during the BDC dwell time). A good, high velocity port is made by removing restrictions (ie the casting lip around the valve seats, doing a multi-angle valve job, and back-cutting the valves) while at the same time minimizing port size. This is what is meant by 'quality over quantity'.

Anyone know of a good place to send a head for testing in the northwest?

Thanks for the info everyone.
