Default fixing timing with adjustable cam gear??

im putting an a6 head on a b7 block.. i do believe when i did it before the timing belt was off by a tooth so i had to pick one way or the other to get the cam to line up.. i dont want this to happen again so im getting an adjustable cam gear but the question is how do i set it..? do i line up the marks with the timing cover marks like normal then loosen the cam gear bolts and rotate the inside? which way would it go? advance or retard?
