First Build - '96 SI/EK
Hello Honda-tech, this is my first post within these forums, and I just wanted to say hi before I got right into the questions!
I'm currently the owner of a 1996 Honda Civic Si (EK <--For the Americans reading this post), and it came with the VTEC D15B 3-Stage motor
No other modifications yet except for a short shifter, 1st generation GSR rims and a RACTIVE air intake.
The plans for the next few months is going to be an install of an H22A, for which I'll need a shop to do the install of. I've found an H22 with low mileage, but as a whole package:
$ 2500 which includes:
-engine
-distributor
-ecu
-transmission
Plus extra for the mounts and whatnot
Yes, I know it's a little bit pricey...I'm sure I can negotiate the price considering I was referred to the shop by a friend on mine with an EG hatch w/ an H22A as well (he also had his swap done there).
This is my first build, so my knowledge isn't exactly up there with the kings of the honda-tech forums, but I'm a quick learner and I've been around many friends with import vehicles before.
My only questions are:
- How much (approximately) would I be spending (CDN) after labour charges screw me?
- Am I getting a FAIR price for the engine & components or should I keep shopping around?
- Are there any parts that I have not listed that are required for the swap?
- Rating from 1-5, on what level difficulty would this whole installation be if I brought my car to a friends place (who has an engine crane and access to other essential tools) and we performed the swap ourselves? Keeping in mind that they have more knowledge at this point than I do.
I apologize for the lengthy post my friends, all I'd like is a little help and maybe a little bit of courtesy...I'm still a newbie so the respect part can be earned in my due time.
I appreciate your help & support, and I will definately keep you guys up to date on the project as it unfolds over the next few months! No exterior modifications are in plan yet except for a new set of rims and a JDM style front lip...possibly fog lights. All the money will be spent on the motor basically.
Here are a few pics of the car as it stands right now:

That seems like quite a bit for a h22 swap.. If you did some looking, you can find one cheaper. They are selling for just about 1200 or less where I am. How much are they charging for labor?

Trying to get 'em to bite, huh? I would agree that $2500 is a bit much nowadays, especially since you still have to buy the mounts, linkage, etc. You could throw a B series in that thing (unless you're dead set on the H) and for the same or less money, have a fire-snortin' beast. Just depends on where you want to go with it, and by that I mean NA or boosting.
