failing power steering pump?
what are the signs of a failing power steering pump?
i just picked up a 91 sentra this weekend for dirt cheap, and when the engine running, there is an intermittent sound(kind of like metal on metal) coming from the power steering pump area. when i turn the steering wheel, the car emits a loud whine, pretty low tone sort of like a moaning sound. when the car is somewhat warmed up, the noise seems to quiet down a bit. is this a sign of the power steering pump in need of replacement? fluid level is fine, i think. TIA

Double check the fluid level in the p/s pump. Some times if its low you will have hard steer or pullsating stearing, along with a loud wine caused by air gettin sucked into the hydrolic pump. If the fluid level is fine it sound like you may have a bad pump. If you end up changeing the pump when its out make sure that no
metal shavening are in it. If so they will be through out the system, and could possible ruin your rack and pinion.
