Re: exhaust why so big (Black-Stang)
For looks and sound.

I have a 2.5in diameter exhaust, it looks completly stock and smaller than the stock muffler. It gives same hp/tq increase or more than the big exhaust mufflers you see.

I'm not about to start defending exhaust, torque, or back pressure.

But basicly, if you have a small engine and the stock exhaust is 2in diameter and you add an exhaust that is 3in in diameter, yes, you will lose some low-end power.

It's for looks, but it looks stupid IMO. A N/A engine shouldn't require more than a 2.5" exhaust pipe diameter. Once you go F/I, everything changes.

In regards to FI....you can't really get too big with an exhaust. Hell if I could run with out an exhaust without getting pulled over I would. See sig for my thoughts on the looks part.

Re: exhaust why so big (Black-Stang)
bigger diameter of piping frees up lost HP..the old myth of "you gotta have a little back pressure for low end grunt" ..is not true at all. but if your piping is too big for your settup then you could lose power as well..its all about getting the right balance..from the size of your motor to cams to compression ratio to port size to your rod/stroke ratio..EVERTHING!

For the same reason they have super-spoilers and light-up windshield nozzles.
