Engine refreshening? Please help, need some ideas.
Car: 1992 DX Hatch
Motor: JDM GSR with a B16 LSD Tranny
Guys I'm starting to hear noises in my engine that are leading me to believe that it's getting old. There is a lot of ticking going on, and people say it's the injectors, but can they really be that loud? Also, sometimes I'll start it up just to let it run for 20 minutes or so (not driving it during the winter) and when I come outside to shut it off, the engine is running loudly. Sounds like engines do when there isn't enough oil in them. The kind of noise that goes away when you put needed oil in an engine. I always check the oil and it's at a safe level, so I know it's not running low.
Honestly I think that my engine is just getting on in miles/years, so my question is what can be done? People always say get a tune up, but I don't really see how an oil change, (mine has had less than 500 miles since I put new mobil 1 synthetic in it) new plugs and wires, (both of mine have about 4000 miles on them and the wires are Magnecor) and an airfilter can make that much of a difference.
Is there something else I might be able to do to give some lovin to my internals? i've considered running quaker state high mileage oil. Also thought about running that engine goo or whatever it is that makes your car smoke like crazy, but everyone says is really good for your engine.
Or is it just time to start tearing my engine apart and rebuilding it with expensive metal bits? If this is the case, I'll do it because I'd rather do it while it's old and worn out than blown up, ya know? Thanks for your replies.

Engine is making noises like old cars start to do.
Do injectors really tick that loud?
What can be done aside from a rebuild?
Is it time for a rebuild?

It could be injectors or you might need a valve adjustment. I would take your car to someone that knows what to listen for since we can't really hear it.
I would run a compression test to see your numbers are consistent across the board. IMO if it is not consuming oil/smoking/rod knocking I would leave it alone, chances are that honda did a better job of assembling the motor than you are going to do.
