Default Engine Oil Help

Hi guys,.

recently i bought a 93 honda civic with 190,000 kms on the clock.I am going to do my first oil change tomorrow, so i need some advice from you all to select the right weight of oil that i should be using in my D15b motor. One of my friends got the same model and he said that Castrol 20-50W would be fine for the car. Would that oil be fine for my car? Pls advice..

thanks in advance

no it won't damage your eng. you car will be slower lol just to the fact that it has more friction do to the weight of the oil. the if you ask honda they will tell you 5w-30 but I wouldn't use that **** if you ask me I rather be safe then sorry, I only use mobile 1 extended life. it's like $7.99 a quart but what other oil has a 15,000 mile warr. on it??

do you drive 15000 miles between oil changes? if you dont, then theres no point in the extended life. Depending on where you live 20W50 might be too stiff. I use 5W-40 on all my cars during winter and the corolla has 20W50 in it for summer to keep up the oil pressure on hot highway driving.

thanks for the replies guys,
I live in australia and its summer time here, so the temp sometimes goes upto 40C and normally its above 20C most of the times. I had a chat with some of the guys here and they said something like 15W-40 would be just fine. And guys, when should i change the timing belt? is it at 200,00km?

no on 15w-40, no to 20w-50. use 5W-30 like you should. civics take the 5w-30 except for the new civics (non si) they take 5w-20 on the R18. the D's take 5w-30. using the heavier oil will make the engine run harder and waist gas and lose power. you shouldnt ever change your oil every 15,000. thats a load of bullshit. t belts should be done every 90-105k miles

thanks for the reply SOHC_4dr. Will get the timing belt change at the next service. As per the engine oil, i check with one of my friends who has a 2005 civic and according to him, the dealership uses 5W-30 engine oil on his car. Do you think that the 5W-30 oil would be alright for my engine which has done nearly 200,000km? thanks in advance mate..
