Engine Lugging

What exactly happens to the engine when it is "lugged?" What are some possible side effects that result from continuous engine lugging? Are any transmission parts affected at all? TIA

Main bearings get stressed quite a bit and will eventually lead to failure in the long-run. Overheating may also result.
