Engine Break-In Suggestions
in 2-3 days i should have my car running again. as some of you may already know...i just bought a brand new ITR head and Shortblock from honda. i've never had a brand new motor before, so i really can't tell you what the BEST way is to break in a motor.
this is what i've been told by several people...
Important Rules, 1 being most important.
1. DO not let the car idle, or stay at constant RPM's at any time during the first 1000 miles.
2. DO not rev past 5k rpm before 500 miles, and ideally speaking have 1000 miles on motor (change oil and filter) before hitting vtec.
now i know everyone has their own theories about how to break in a motor...and honda's engineering is good enough where it probably doens't matter that much...however i want to do this correctly so my motor lasts for 60-80k miles.

there was a link on here about driving it REAL hard the first couple hundred miles. and I agree with that method, maybe someone will post the link (i might be able to find it later)

Ask 50 people, get 50 answers. I changed oil at 150, 500, and 1000 (no synthetic). Also, don't do highway miles if possible. Vary the rpms the best you can. It's kind of a PITA, but owrth it. Good luck.

TypeRBob, i'm going to do something similar...probably go 500 miles before my first oil change...but we'll see...
and i'm going to vary the rpm's as much as possible...and stay under 5k for at least 500 miles...maybe more.
and i am going to use castrol motor oil.

i dont know if i would agree to this totally 100% but some of it makes sense.

interesting article...i will show this to a few of my friends...to see what they think...
unfortunately this is my first brand new motor, so i just don't know!

The way i broke my motor in was to run below 4k first 200 miles w/ 1/4 throttle pulls. Next 300 miles reved to about 5500-6000k w/ 1/2throttle pulls. then took it to the track beat the **** out of it. Next 500 miles drove the **** out of it doesnt smoke or leak a drop runs like a beast.
I'm actually interested in this as well. I'm more interested in the theory though. I've read the site mentioned and the other threads that have circulated on HT.. but I want to get into this further. Let's say we choose the drive the hell out of it method first- Debate the issue if we must... Kind of make a guide to go by and pros vs cons type of thread so others will be able to read this and use the info correctly.
I've read a lot of information about this too. And the thing I keep seeing come up is to change your oil frquently. So just to pull some numbers out of my ***, change your oil at 100, 300, 500 and 1000 miles and make sure to vary the rpms and get on it every now and then and you should be golden.
I'm way **** about my motor when it's new... I change the oil after 50, 150, 275, 400, ect. It may be a waste of oil, then it may not.. I do this up to 1k then change oil as normal.

i dunno if i'd be able to do that method unless i saw someone else do it and have good results over a light break in. and even then i'd still be a little ***** about it.

I gaurantee that every new type r bought from the acura dealer was revved cold to redline right away, by the tech who did the pdi. I worked at honda when the SI's came out and I know thats what I did
I have had the best luck with spirited (up to 75% throttle and 6k)driving for 200 miles then to the dyno.
