Post Engine Braking

I heard that engine braking is bad on the motor and can cause syncro wear/clutch wear/ drive train wear. I engine brake smoothly on a daily basis and im just wondering if it will do any harm.

smoothly done (as you are suggesting) there is no more stress on the drive train than normal driving, the loads just reverse direction. on a healthy motor it's fine.

It wears your synchros only when you downshift and dont manually spin up your trans input shaft with an intermediate clutch step. If you don't do this, then you're relying on the syncro to spin it up.

Engine braking will not hurt anything unless the parts are weak already. But if that is the case, then hard accelerating will break the same parts.

Remember though that brakes are for braking. No point in down shifting a bunch of times just to slow down.

But that's no fun. Braking and heel toe downshifting is the way to go.

^ LOL...I see no point in engine braking unless your coming down a a steep road, and your brakes start to go, then yes engine brake away. If your just coming to a light, pop in neutral and step on your brake pedal.

It will improve you gas mileage compared to pushing in the clutch and using the brakes.

I could see how that makes sense since you're not really adding more fuel or air in and the car is not idling. If that is why that is true?

I do it almost at every light and you get used to your gear ratios and all that so you know how high the rpm you need to match it at should be.

All the practice you get at it during daily driving will help you out when you're on the turns and don't want your brakes to keep heating up

^^^I agree

Your wearing out a $1000 dollar transmission to save on 50$ brakes.
Daily driving I don't down shift but if your driving hard or on a track Heel toe all you want.

The injectors shut off at 0* tps when the car is moving.

Yea, the only time I engine brake is this one place where I have to make a right hand turn off the main road at the bottom of a big hill. Easier to drop into neutral, spin it up, shift into 2nd and then power through the turn....funnest portion of my ride home every day.

I would engine brake up to the turn, get on the gas, lift off halfway through it to get the grocery getter sideways, and THEN power through the turn. Now that's fun.

Let's say that you rev match when down shifting but over rev. How would that effect the trans?

It depends on your definition of rev matching. ie, are you matching revs with the clutch pedal down in between gears (say 3rd directly to 2nd), or are you matchin revs with the clutch pedal up in while in neutral in between gear shifts (say 3rd to neutral to 2nd)

Clutch down, heel-toe.

Again, heel-toe can be done two ways. If you use the intermediate step (blipping while clutch pedal is up and in neutral) then you're not burning up your syncros.

If you just clutch heel toe 3rd directly into 2nd, it may sound and feel like you're doing something, but you're using the syncro to spin up the input shaft on the trans.

I've got an SI with almost 140,000 mi and all my syncros are still great.
