Plain and simple... you've got two basic systems involved.

First one is the battery. It provides the current to crank the starter and provide the electrical current to operate all the electrical stuff on the car.

The second is the alternator. It provides a recharge to the battery, and can help out when the draw is excessive.

If the battery is taking a crap, either its no good or isn't being recharged by the alternator. If its not getting recharged, check the alternator belt tension and the wiring from the alt to the main fuse block under the hood. If you have a voltmeter, measure the battery voltage (should be at least 12.4v). Start the engine and measure again while its running. (should be around 14v)

Make sure the dang battery posts connections are tight and clean, too.

NEVER ever do that. It can create a current spike and short the ecu.
