Default electircal issues

so i was testing my ect sensor today and in my haynes it said if i remember correctly that it should be seeing 5volts.

when i tested it i was seeing 12volts to the sensor, this is positive lead to power wire negative lead to body ground.

im no electrician can someone please explain to me what this means? i also tested it at the ecu pins and i was also getting 12volts?

i know this is kind of a broad question but im pretty well stupid when it comes to wiring and what not.

by the way the reason i was testing sensors is because my car will run and drive fine for awhile but after coming to a stop and shutting the car off for say 5mins, and then turning it back on it will basically cut out and miss and wont barely idle till i let it cool off.

but the heat gauge is showing perfect engine temp so something isnt right,

thanks
