EK weight reduction - structural support?

EK weight reduction - structural support?

Has anyone removed the thick metal plates underneath the rear seat? Do these serve as a structural support, or could they safely be removed from the car? They look pretty heavy...

my 96 EK doesn't have it (FACTORY).. my friends 98 EK does (FACTORY).... think about it...
