my ecu blinks 12 short times. that means it the egr. but isnt it suppose to blink 1 long time and 2 short times. and i clean the hell out of my egr, it was all clogged with deposits, and i reseted the ecu, and its still throwing the code. should i just change it out, and how much should it cost? what should i do?

 

Code 12 should be 1 long & 2 short.

How long is the space between blinks? Maybe(?) you got code 1 and it's just repeating itself over & over again...

 

it blinks 12 short times, then it stops for a quick one, then it blinks 12 short times all over again. but i got smogged, and failed, and the guy said it wasnt the egr itself but the the thing that controls the egr

What year and model?

 

If it is indeed a code #12, first thing to do is take a vacuum pump to the EGR valve and see if it holds vacuum. If it does not hold vacuum, you need an EGR valve. If it does hold vacuum, and all of your vacuum connections are good, you probably need an EGR Frequency Control Solenoid Valve.
