Default ECU Testing questions

i saw one shop manual where you can test each sensors in the engine. there are some measurement which involves certain measurements between the sensor and a pin on the ECU. The shop manual used a PGM-FI Test Harness. i was wondering if you can test it without the PGM-FI Test Harness. Will the ECU get damage if you don't use one and just stick a probe where a wire would come out of the socket? where can this harness be purchase?
Thanks.

The test harness is used to test ecu circuits without having to "backprobe" or stick wires with the testing device.
You can get by without a test harness but make sure to clean up after testing which includes..

repair any broken/damaged connections, and use a sealant to cover pinholes to prevent moisture from doing anymore damage down the road...
