ECU question
This is the whole story. I went to a honda dealer to get my valves adjusted and I smelt a little gas when driving, they told me that they could not work on my car because I had either the wrong computer or it was chiped So Im trying to find the correct computer for my 97 ex civic 5sp d16y Is there a certain serial number or code on the ecu itself that will let me know that I am buying the correct ecu. And would an ecu cause this problems and couldn't they be fixed any way with the wrong or chiped ecu, im mean does that really make a difference I just want to find the correct ecu so any help would be great
Thanks
Thanks

Well what ECU do you have now. The barcode on yoru current ecu should read P2P somewhere in there.

i'm guessing you have a p2p ecu (obd2)
unless someone did an obd2 to obd1 conversion, i highly doubt you have a chipped ecu as obd2 is very difficult to chip.
on the side of the ecu it should have a bar code and some numbers.. it'll read like this: 37820-P2P-A00..... the last 3 digits change alot.. depending on if you have an auto or manual tranny.. or where the car is from.. european have a different letter in the last 3 digits.. like G01 or there are many other combinations..
anyway.. the P2P in that number is the important thing.
also why would the dealership automatically think the ecu was chipped or changed just cuz they smelled gas? i say thats a load of crap... my ecu is chipped.. you wont smell any gas from my teg.. now if someone did chip your ecu and your car was running very RICH... but i doubt it..
go look at your ecu check to see if your harness has been modified or has a "conversion harness" connected to it..
is your motor stock?

All I have done to my motor is header, intake and Msd cap and coil. My ecu does say P2P on it, but it does say Lx on it in big black letters off to the side on the serial code sticker does that matter my car is an ex, I dont see a conversion harness. How would I know if it is chiped? I am going to take pics so you can see to make sure Im not making a mistake
THanks for the help so far

I know the DX comes with the P2E ecu. The LX has the same motor from what I know. So the LX should NOT have a P2P, P2P is a vtec ecu...
If their diagnostic machine can't connect to the computer to determine why there are problems, try checking the ECU diag fuse. That will prevent their diag computer from talking to it.
