Default ECU question....

hey...

ok, i have a JDM P13 ECU

osaka say its OBD1... but my friend says its OBD2 because it has 4 plugs instead of 3.

is this because its from a 4 wheel steering model prelude? or what. why is it 4 plugs in back. i thought obd 1 had only 3??

help me out here.

here is osaksa official reply:

" Hi there
the ecu that we sent with h22 motor
that ecu is for the obd1 because we never carry the obd2 ecu
its very hard to find obd2 h22 in japan we dont think that they even make
those
so we are 100%sure that the ecu that we have sent to you thats for the obd1
and if you see
you have three green plugs on the ecu or some times four
and also for the obd2 you have a different code for the ecu not the p13
thanks
have a great day

usually auto-P13 ecus used 4 plugs so yes they do exist. its used for traction control. there are some 4 plug 5spd ecus as well, but either way. if its auto p13 then it can be as easily chipped and no problems.

sticker should be 37820-p13-j01 or j00 or 000 if its J51 or n51 or 901 then its auto

also JDM 94-5 auto SiR-G (GSR) came with 4 plug ecu as well, so its nothing uncommon.
this is the reason why honda calls the plugs in the NA, as A/B/D the C is the 4th plug

ok.. it must be auto then.

the sticker reads 37820-P13-J50

j50 = auto??

so i have to have it chipped for it to work or what?

i bought a knock off spoon chip from someone on ebay. i'm hoping that will work.

thanks for the help so far.

osaka = poop

sorry for the double post.

my ecu has 4 plugs, but the plugs are the size style of the obd1 ecu but there's 4.

so i think eg6ajk is right and it is an auto ecu....

do i just not plug in a set of wires or what?

thanks again

yes J50 = auto. you can use it in a stock form but CEL will come up (code 19). if you chip it then it should work just fine.

don't worry about the plug at all. its for TCS

I have two ecu's with 4 plugs one was an auto and the other is a 5-spd. I bought the auto and had it chipped to manual and i was told that all you need to do is change out the chip to make the converson. The place that chipped mine also sells chips on ebay.

One thing i have noticed with the ecu that was converted to 5-spd was that it has a higher and fluxuating (sp) idol now. But when i put my 5-spd ecu in, i dont have any idol problems at all. I have read other post about people having the same kind of issues after getting their ecu converted. I dont know if it is a poor chip or just a problem that the converson from manual to 5-spd produces.

I just wanted to let you know of possible issues with the conversion. If anyone can prove or disprove this please do so, thanks

Does the 4 plug on your P13 ecu look exactly like this ? ...
(JDM 4-plug AT P72 ecu shown)

if so, it IS an OBD1 ecu...its not OBD2.
What obd2-likeness about it is the onboard hardware, there's no 28pin eprom chip to reprogram, which makes it un-reprogrammable, to an exent.

I personally haven't come across a 4-plug P13 ecu nor had to chip one, but according to Adrian, I guess they are repgrammable and have an onboard 28-pin eprom.

o nice...
yeah, looks like you have a 28pin eprom chip on there (like Adrian said). It's reprogrammable.

as i said before "all you need to do is change out the chip to make the converson"

just watch out for possible issues caused by a knock off chip that isnt tuned for your mods

well if you've never chipped your own ecu before, be careful, its way easy to f'up your ecu....pull a trace n' what not.

If the chip has a 5-speed P13 program burned onto it, then yes, your ecu will become a 5speed ecu and you shouldn't get a code 19 (19= lock solenoid, found on most AT transmissions).

Nice site(s) btw..
