heres the scenario...when i start my car after having it psrked for a while and everything is cold i hear this whistling sound for 10 to 20 seconds...after that time its gone..but while driving at low speeds and low rpms...i tend to hear it everynow and then but not as loud as when its cold and i start it....also if u rev the engine i can hear a whine with the engine being revved...thought it was the power steering so i flushed the fluid..nothing changed...its very hard to pin point the sound other than saying the drive belts...but i put my ear to the valve cover once and thought it was coming from under the cover..(rod bearing perhaps)...dont have the money right now to send it to the shop but with income tax coming up i"ll throw a grand into the cars maintence....any ideas till then to either comfort my curiosity or irratate it....thankz...

 

Rod bearings knock.

The whining sound could be your alternater.

Get short piece of large hose and put one end to your ear the other on vairous parts of the car till you hear something like the noise you are trying to find.

Also, check your belt conditions. See if they are dry rotted or grooved.

 

but its more of a loud whistle then a whine...kinda like those high pitched dog whistles but not as high of a pitch as the dog whistle...the belts do seem to have some wear on them... and i"ll be replacing them all very soon...i tried belt dressing on them but had no effect on the belts....just trying to give u a lil more of an idea of what it sounds like and what im doing to diagnose where the sound is coming from.... for your interest in helping out....
