the downfall on running low on gas..
i know running almost empty is bad, but would like to know what it actually doest to the motor/car. thanks in advance to whoever knows.
Mostly it will effect the fuel pump . The pump being sumerged in the fuel is what helps cool fuel pump motor . Over the long run it will deteriate the motor and cause it to fail .
That and the fact that if you have fuel starvation on a track... you may get a surge/cut in power and fly off the track. I've seen it, not fun.

On the flipside, gas weighs about 7lbs a gallon....12 gallons is about a 100 lbs...small engines dont tote weight very good. When you go to the track it becomes a factor.....3gdude

The Other day I was driving on 'E' on the freeway. I had filled up the tank and got about 235 miles before i got back to 'E'. After getting off the freeway i noticed the car idling really eratically as if it were going to cut off and then it would surge ( i would hear the throttle open for a sec). I filled the tank back up and raised the idle a lil but still the engine does the same thing, just not as bad (meaning i does not sound like it is going to cut off). Another unwelcome outcome I have recieved with this turn of events is that I have only drove about 50 miles so far after filling up and now im at half tank.

I was told that it may be the fuel system.

Bad example, but still....
On my old Honda motorscooter, the gas tank rusted a good bit on the inside, and everytime I let it run empty, it would suck up the rust at the bottom of the tank, and I'd have to take off all the lines and filter and clean/blow it all out.
It's possible you sucked somethin up.

I have also heard that, when you let the tank run low, it allows water moisture to build up in the tank. This causes the tank to rust on the inside. I don't have any personal experience to back this information up, but it was what I was told when I was younger. I'm not sure if this is even possible, but some of you other guys can let me know if I'm wrong.
