does a tranny have a VIN number??

just wondering if there was a VIN or some other kind of ID number on Trannys.

Yeah, they have their own serial number.

But 'VIN' is the VEHICLE id number. Beginning in (I think?) 1996 USA required the car's VIN to be stamped on all kinds of major parts, like the engine, tranny, hood, trunk, firewall, whatever.

So if it's '96 or newer, the tranny will have a VIN tag along with it's own serial number.

my 96 civic doesnt have a vin on the motor, but it does have a serial number.

That could be because it was early production and actually came out in end of 95 though.
