yeap, since 1992 when it was first introduced on the NSX, but again, honda evolved too, the put the i-VTEC out, which is more advance than VTEC but it might not be as advance as the BMW VANOS or the Ferrari one.

DANG! that's a lil more than 10 years ago!

actually ford's ZETEC, or however you spell it, is just a name for the engine, nothing like vtec except the name.

I also read/heard that BMW is working or already have a system that uses solenoid actuated valves. Talk about total control of lift, duration, and timing. NO CAMS. Less moving parts.

What's the name of that crazy technology Lamborghini uses where the valves are flaps that open up twice to lengthen the air/fuel charge or whatever? anyone know what I'm talking about?

well, at some point, most of the manufacturers will do this, remember that the F1 has been running without cams since a while ago, they use hydraulics for this. So my guess is that in a couple of years we will see this on street car, the question is, how reliable they will be?

bmw´s vanos is nothing like hondas vtec.... vanos is just elecronicly controlled adjustabel camgears. What I´ve read hondas I-VTEC is the same thing but with vtec..

BMW is working on a system that controlls the throttel with the lift of the valves so there is no throttelbody with throttel. I didn´t get if it was that you gus were talking about...... With that system you can controll the lift but still you cant controll for how long the valves will be open.. like vtec 10 yars earlyar....

Hey GZERO vtec was introduced befor 1992. The 88 crx siR came w/ a b16 vtec engine. But that was in japan. 92 might of been the first time it was in the US.

o ok, i tought i read somewhere that was the NSX, but you might be right.

And as for the guy that said that BMW is working on something, it already has and it's on production, it is called VALVOTRONIC, the first car with it was the 318Ti (can remember if it was those letters), but anyway, the computer controls the openin of the valves, it controls lift as well as time and it doesn't use a TB.

every car has there own version of vtec.. most other companys have a cam phaser and it always adjusts cam timing to get optimal fuel consumption.

VVT is becoming a very popular thing in engines.

Every manufacturer has some form of it.The most widely used one is VVT,but many others are simply VVT renamed by brand. These technologies can be used on intake/exhaust or simply intake sides of the motor.Vtec is only different because it has 2 completely separate cam lobe profiles which are activated hydraulically.VVT,on the other had uses the engines speed to phase the cams, therefore changing how the valves open and close. There are many different methods to accomplish this,Some versions of Nissan and Mitsubishi's technology are basically the same as Vtec.
Many disillusioned Honda drivers gloat about their Vtec cars like it's special high performance stuff, but it's real purpose is to provide high rpm power and lower rpm fuel efficiency.

VTEC affects valve lift directly, and there are few systems out there that emulate it using that as a standard. VTC is not VTEC. VTC is used to retard and advance camshafts on many different engines. Most of these do not affect the lift of the valve itself, but rather its timing.

Nissan uses a cam-less VTC and "VTEC" or valve-lift system in the VQ37 engines called VVEL. This system while complex is quite the engineering feat. It has infinitely variable life on the intake valves within the mechanical limits. Porsche also messed around with a system to vary the valve lift, I think part of the original VANOS system, but I am personally unaware of the development of it or if it's used at all. I don't keep tabs on BMW. Toyota also used the VVTL-i system with the rare 2ZZ engine (different head from the 1ZZ Corolla and similar). I am not aware of any other us application except for that weird looking Celica around the 2000's. Mitsubishi does have MIVEC which is quite similar mechanically to the VTEC system used by Honda.

Anything else is VTC based, and in most cases VTC is used to control emissions by retarding the exhaust cam to promote an EGR style effect. Today though, VTC is generally found on both intake and exhaust for both power and economy (emissions).

The only car I know of that uses Honda VTEC as Honda uses it, is the L66 3.5L VTEC engine used in the Saturn Vue. (More commonly known to us as the Odyssey Minivan.)
