Do i need a bigger impact gun.
I'm having trouble getting my Rusty exhaust bolts off. I been useing my craftman impact gun how ever i've tryed heat from my propape torch and i've used a lot of PB blast. and I still cant get the bolts off ive been hammering on them for 2 hours with the impact gun Do i need a bigger one ? It's a 1/2 inch craftsman 230lbs of max torque should I get a bigger one is this the reason why i cant break them loose lets say a 400-600lbs of torque would that work
i was thinking of taking a cut off wheel to it and cutting threw the bolts. But would a bigger gun with more torque work or should i not even attempt that route

when it dont come off with the gun I grab the big breaker bar. when that dont work, its time to cut. I often find bolts that are too snug for the impact.
Cutting the bolts off crossed my mind I was just wondering if a bigger gun would work before going the cutting route. Because i figured 230 foot lbs of max torque wasent a whole lot. I dont however want to snap the bolts. And I didn't mean for it to sound stupid as for what would be better to cut it off with i was just trying to get peoples opinions. I've never cut any exhaust bolts or anybolts on a car for that matter and i have battery grinders air die grinders air angle grinders and a dremmel with a cut off kit that says it wouls go threw metal. So I was just trying to get peoples opinions. Next time i go under there i'll try the gun again the breaker bar and than grinder.
PyroProblem Re:.230 ft/lbs of TQ is nothing for a 1/2" impact.
I think my IR titanium is something like 700 ft/lbs...
Thats what I figured Especially when talking about really rusty exhaust bolts. So now the questions do I cut it like several peoples said or get a bigger gun like some people said ? I would rather not cut it if not needed.... However I dont want to cause more harm than good and break or snap the bolts...

If there really rusty, then there probably gonna break either way. Do them by hand and they might break.Use an impact gun, they also might break...
You should invest in a good impact though anyways. Good tools are always a good investment...
I would try everything else first before cutting or drilling them out. Cutting/Drilling to me is the last thing I want to do.
If all else fails though, you will probably have to resort to cutting it...
There is this tool called a "screw knocker" or "old man". Its used alot in aviation structures and also automotive. Basically its a punch that goes into an air hammer or rivet gun. You attach a socket at the end of the set, and it will hammer the fastener as you turn it....
Good luck!

This is what you need or something similar to oit. Check pawn shops in your area. I see impacts similar to these going for ~ $100 used..
