Default Distributor gear noise

Need opinions/ideas. CRX HF 190,000 miles. There's a knocking noise coming from the distributor base when the motor is cold and goes away when the motor warms up. The noise has been there since I got the car 58,000 miles ago. I've used a stethoscope to isolate the noise. I think the distributor gear is sliding on the pin and knocking on the distributor shaft when the motor is cold. I'm not sure, but I think it may be caused by wear on the camshaft jounals causing the cam to wobble in the journals until the engine is warm. When the engine warms, the metal swells which stops the cam wobble. Just a theory. I've compared the looseness of the D-gear to Honda distributors at NAPA and I can't find any difference. There is a tad bit of movement when I pry the camshaft up at every journal, but it doesn't seem like enough to throw the D-gear around.
