distributor?????
what will happen if you run the car w/othe litle spring that sits in the cap????????????????

I guess it might do a lot of misfiring, or maybe not even run. Did you try that??
That spring completes the circuit from the coil's seconday tower over to the rotor. There's probably enough air gap that it won't arc over every time. Even if it did, the arcing would eventually damage the coil, cap, or rotor.
