having winter wheels and tires protects your nice wheels and allows you to run ultra high performance tires in the summer and winter tires in the winter.

to sum it up,

is snow bad for wheels (not tires) in general?

I was asking b/c a lot of people have 'steelies/crap' wheels for their winter tires;
is this just b/c they dont care about the looks in the winter, and want the cheapest things for snow tires?

if you dont wanna go throught the mess of changing you wheels, then just clean them every once in awhile. i think they damage your wheels, but not your tires.

yeah, that's basically it. And steelies are usually skinny, and skinny tires do better in the snow. If you plan on wearing chains, those can hurt your wheels. As can sand, I suppose. Plus they are going to get very dirty. and there is a posibility of sliding on ice into a curb, which will damage the rim...

It's not the snow that's bad for them.....snow is just frozen rain pretty much, and rain isn't bad for the rims.......it's the salt that eats eveything away. Trust me I live in Ohio

i live in central new york and last spring, when i thought winter was over, i put my new giovanna rims on (i was very impatient) and two days later we had another snowfall. i drove acout 5 miles on the sanded/salted roads and the debris (sand/salt) that spun off of my front tires hit the outer rim of my rear rims and chipped the hell out of the clearcoat. This year i smartened up and bought a winter rat.
