I've seen on some machining sites what seems to be two different types of honing. One method which just seems to be a normal hone and the other called a line hone (which always costs more). I'm guessing a line hone is when they index off the crank? Could someone explain the various methods and which is the proper way for a well built engine? Thanks in advance.
I'm not sure which sites you're looking at, but the 'usual' honing most commonly refers to honing/deglazing the cylinder bores, while a line hone is for the main journals.

Well I guess that explains why its always extra
. At least I learned something lol. Well I've seen talk of people indexing (might be another term) off the crank for honing, but then I know of people that have just had there bare block sent off to be honed.

You might be thinking of a line bore, where they index off the crank when boring the cylinder, but not honing. Honing is normally done with 3 stones that are spring loaded used to clean glazing off of the cylinder so when you put the new rings in they can seat properly.
