Default Differences between alternators?

Are there any functional differences between OBD0/1/2 alternators other than the shape of the plug (ie if the round plug is swapped to a square one will an OBD2 alt work in a OBD0 car)?

They all perform the same function with the same voltage settings. I'm pretty sure that if you wired up a different plug, or hardwired it, then pretty much any alternator would work with any other engine. The one thing I worry about would be the exact wires and their destinations. Take a wiring diagram (Haynes or Helms manual) and make sure that there are the same number of wires and that their eventual destinations are the same, if so then you are good to go.
