Default Did I break my differential?

Well after going to the track, when I launched off the line my car broke. Wouldn't move forward, and the speedometer would go up as I pushed the gas in gear, but no movement. Had to be pushed off the track. Got it home, pulled the axle out. When you spin the wheel on the other side, sometimes it'll spin on the other side, sometimes it won't. Check out this video below of what its doing and tell me what you think. I think it's going to come down to the differential, so basically a new tranny if I wanna get up and running any time soon. Thanks all.

Are you sure your axle is ok? In the video do are you spinning the wheel or do you have the engine running in gear?

Is it a d16z6? Those trannys suck, i've destroyed 2 of them in the past 2 months. They cannot handle the stress from good tires, or a good clutch. It probably needs to be replaced, my differential locked up a couple of weeks ago. It sucks. If your differential is locked, both wheels will spin in the same direction, if it's working , they will spin opposite. Sorry dude, but those things are a bitch, that's why i'm headed for b-series territory.

Damn, that's what I've noticed. They are spinning in the same direction. Take a look at this picture. What are these gears called? I tried looking in my Helm's manual but I can't pinpoint what they are. If I stick a screwdriver in there and poke at them, it's like they are free floating in there. Is that normal?

One more thing too about my axles. If you look at the picture below. If I grab onto number 1 with one hand, and number 2 with the other and spin in opposite directions, I'm able to turn it. The rollers inside slip out of the joint. Is this normal? I'm assuming it is because when the axle is in the car, they wouldn't be able to turn. Thanks a lot all.

That would be your problem if you can spin the halfshaft in opposite directions...

Diff go boom. Spider gears dropped down when you pulled the axles.

Go find another tranny.

Did you notice any rattling or vibrating before this happened? Were your mounts in good shape? I'm not saying that transmissions or inner joints don't break on their own, but most of the time, there is a mount that is broken that is causing excessive wear on the inner joint, and when it goes bad it starts vibrating. I've got a friend who has a bad inner joint on his 98 gsr and i keep telling him that it's going to **** up his transmission, but he won't listen. Pretty soon he's going to have to buy at least a new differential, and possibly a new transmission. All he needs is a $60 axles. idiots.

Advice everyone should remember!
inner joints vibrate
outer joints click.

You'll need to completely disassemble the tranny housing, and then remove the differential. Since you already have the tranny apart, might I recommend that you fork up the extra cash, and find a LSD (you can find a Quaife for that tranny for under 800 shipped). Be sure to replace your two differential bearings as well.

Agree...just save a couple more bills and get a lsd ...My bro is paying 550 just to fix the differential..don't have enough money to get a LSD...

usually when the diff explodes, it wipes out the tranny casing also.
