Diagnosing Vtec problem (VTS Error Code 21)
Hi guys,
I know this question comes up a lot and is a bit of a noob question but this is probably a bit more specific.
Background - I have an EG with B16A2 (OBD2 engine from EK4 - AUS using P30 ECU) and I'm getting error code 21 VTEC spool solenoid.
When I checked the fault codes with just the ignition ON (engine not running) I don't get any error codes. But as soon as I start the car I get Error Code 21. Would this suggest that the problem is mechanical related not electrical/wiring related problem?
I've done the basic checks, tap a wire directly from battery to VTS, check the VTS filter, check resistance between VTS and body and also should mention i'm using a relay to trick the ECU into thinking theres a VTP switch.
I'm guessing the problem is possibly oil pressure related or a problem with the VTP relay I wired in.
Appreciate any help thanks.

I'm hoping its not an ECU problem. I thought it was after testing the ECU VTS output with a test light but I tried another ECU (JDM P30) and it still gave me the same error code.
Thanks for that. Most of the FSM troubleshooting has already been done and tested.
I think I've fixed half of the problem so far. Today I found the VTS wire going into the ECU was holding on by 1 or 2 strands of wire so removed that, repaired and re-fitted.
Also removed the relay I wired in because I believe it was causing some resistance between the VTS and ground (has to be between 14-30 ohm).
So now the error code is no longer coming up for VTS 21 but still no vtec. I think the electrical side of it is now sorted and its most likely a mechanical problem now, possibly oil, oil pressure, dented oil pan...
