Icon3 destroyed b-series oil pump

hi,

i thought i'd share it with others, as this is the first time i've ever seen a brand new oil pump shredding itself into pieces.. the pump was new, it had 1800 miles on it, it was correctly installed, nothing wrong with it, the oil pressure was there, everything was fine. suddenly, at around 8000rpm (and also @14psi of boost), it just stopped working. this is what we saw after opening it:

the gears are totally fu**ed...

has anyone ever seen anything like that happen to a new pump???

pct n1. everything in the rotating assembly is balanced, including the pulley.

Was that an OEM oil pump?

Was the pump stock?modified?(by endyne, etc.) That pct n1 crank pulley was probably what caused that, you should have used the stock crank pulley that came with the crank.

^ agree That pct offers no dampening effect.

100% stock oem oil pump. no modifications.

how come there are lots of engines running pulleys with no absorbers (pct, unorthodox) and they're ok?

Some are luckier than others.

No dampening on the crank pulley means the pump takes the brunt of the harmonics.

If the rotating assembly was balanced properly, I'd bet on a defective oil pump.

I've seen 5 broken brand new oem pumps. all happened while running non dampened OEM pulleys. 1 N1, 2 with OBD-0 LS pulleys, 2 with aftermarket aluminum pulleys. Switching to dampned pulleys solved this. And all 5 were balanced properly

If harmonics caused the pump failure, I would expect more carnage though. Especially at 8000 RPM's.

I agree, you should always use a dampened pulley.

make sure your clearances between our oil pump and crank are right

The clearances between the gear and the housing are pretty tight that normally the gear fails and does exactly what the OP gear looks like. I would hang my loot on the crank pully killing that too.

Oh man the images of a blown oil pump brings back so much bad memories.

It happened to me and I had a under drive pully on the crank well sure enough the harmonics destroyed the pump.

After that I never use anything other then the Honda crank pullies, right now I am rocking a stock B20 crank pully. It's much lighter then the LS, GsR or ITR ones cause the center parts is hollow but the B20 pully will overdrive your accessories which is why I got it.

yes it was. we'll check the pump/crank clearance as soon as the new pump arrives. we haven't measured it during the first assembly.

now we will.
