d16z6 head inspection
there has to be a thread about head inspection around this forum somewhere. I searched, but didnt find any.
i purchased a z6 head with unknown miles. I plan to use it on a project, but I'm not sure how to inspect it for problems. I assume I need to see if the valves are seating and if they are worn. I called up the local place and they want 160 to tear it down and inspect it. so i would like to see how much of the inspection i can do myself.
any links or help would be great.
thanks
Nick

160 bucks isnt that bad to teardown and inspect, given that the people inspecting are reputable and know what to look for bc they will catch things that the average person with little or no experience will likely miss. However, there are a few things you can do yourself like buying machinists straight edge ruler to check if the head is level and not warped. Also you can get some dykem and pull the valves, then put the dykem on the seats and pop the valves down and check the dykem to see if they are seating evenly all the way around the seat. You can tell if the guides need to be replaced by feel, but it would help to feel how a good guide feels first if youve never done it before. Other than that, you could check for cracks with some inspection spray you can get at a welding supply store. A quality machine shop has much better equipment and way more experience, so they will be able to do a better job just bc of that. Hope that helps you out a little
