Default cv boots

As I was washing my car yesterday I noticed a lot of grease on the drivers side wheel well. I took a look under the car and I have a torn CV boot. I haven't noticed if there is any clicking yet because I usually drive with the stereo up and I haven't driven the car since I washed it yesterday.

After reading some things online and doing a search. It seems like the easiest and less messy way is to just replace the drive axle. Can you buy these axles at pepboys, autozone, or Napa? If so how much do they usually run? Are they just as good as the OEM ones from the dealership? Do they come with everything I need? Also are these parts that both the stores and the dealership carry on site. Or will I have to wait for these parts to come in from an order.

Also when I did the search people talked about an inner boot and an outer boot. Does that mean theres a boot within a boot? Or is the inner boot near the transmission and the outer boot near the wheel hub?

Am I going at it in the right way by replacing the axles? How much money will I save by just replacing the boot assuming the cv joint hasnt been contiminated.

Thanks for the help.

yeah you can, they run about 70 bucks a piece or so...

I dont know if their quality is the same as an oem axle, but they come with a lifetime warranty. all you need is the axle and the spindle nut. most of the time if you call around you can find somewhere with one in stock.

inner boot is the boot near the tranny, outer being the one by the hub.

i think boots cost about 20 bucks or so, im not sure, but its a pain in the *** to replace them if you dont know what youre doing, and its messy

Yes.

Not very much I believe it is around 50 per axle but I could be mistaken.

Just about as good and yes the will come with everything you need.

It depends on the car, usually NAPA stocks lots of older Honda axles so they are probably your best bet.

The latter

Yes.

Not enough to make it worthwile.

Thanks for the help.

Instead of buying PepBoys axles, you could find some gravel, put it in a coffee can and put a stick in it with a glad trash bag wrapped around it and this would be about the same quality for much less. Carquest has decent axles, have not had much luck with other aftermarket axles. PepBoys axles are JUNK.

why dont you just replace the cv boot. Its much cheaper and if you know that the joint is still ok then why replace the whole thing? If you really want to know how to change the cv boot then let me know. It is really not that hard if you have a vice and a hammer.

How big is the tear in the boot? Is it completely torn?

If it's not clicking, then don't waste any extra money on an axle. Take it to a mechanic and he can open it and tell you if it's contaminated or not...

A new boot with freshly packed grease will run ~$200 at a Honda dealership and ~$100 at any generic repair place.
