custom intake for '95 civic v-tec
My son has a '95 Civic, which means I have a '95 Civic by association. My son wants to install some kind of custom intake with a K&N type filter. Since I will be held accountable by my wife for whatever comes of this, I want some more info on this subject.
He has been looking at cold air intakes, but says they have some problems. Do they? What are they? Can someone give me a little help in deciding what to buy, install, etc.? I know next to nothing about modifying Honda engines, so I am totally in the dark.
Thanks in advance!!!!!

Edit: Welcome to the world of honda and have your son get on this board we will be able to answer just about any question he or you have!
The intake just relocates the filter into the wheel well. But, it also get's rid of the resonator (which quites the intake)....in other words the car will sound like it has a pair.
It also uses a cone filter instead of a flat filter therefore, it can pull air in from all sides. AEM makes one that is 50 State legal (California will not approve anything unless it has an Executive Order (EO) number). This ususally costs 200 dollars.
These filters are very reliable however there is one issue with a CAI (cold air intake) If you drive into a puddle they will breath in water and the engine will hydro lock.....VERY bad (results are usually bent rods). If you do decide to let him get a CAI, make sure he gets a Bypass (35-50 dollars) that way if the air filter is submerged it will breath through the bypass instead of sucking up water. The short ram version of the intake doesn't go into the wheel well and is in the engine bay, it goes for around 150 dollars however it breathes the warm air from the engine in the compartment.
Cliff Notes: CAI can cause Hydro lock without a bypass. Get a short ram intake you will only gain 1-2 hp with the CAI over the short ram. If in California get one with an Executive Order on the device or pay the fine.

Below is a site as to make your own intake. If cash tight but time isn't this is a good way to go also it could be fun doing it with your son.
