Default crx bogs and backfires...help!

my brother who is left home for collage today, making about a 150 mile trip to mizzou..he was about 5 miles away when he noticed he was on Empty so he was pulling off to fill up and his car started bogging and backfiring then it died on the offramp..he said he knew it wasn't out of gas though because hes had it go like a quarter inch below the E once...but he walked up and got some gas and filled it up.
And it still wont start it cranks but it just bogs and backfires...any thoughts

burnt up fuel pump?
clogged fuel filter?

thanks

can you hear the fuel pump priming? do you have a fuel pressure guage? running your gas really low, does let your pump heat up or over even heat.

ask them whats wrong with it, if its the ignitor or the coil you can buy the parts and do it yourself. Its very simple

look around the classifieds, there might be a broken dizzy for sale that has a good shaft, you can just swap all the internals into another one

highest failure ignition system on the market. definately replace the whole distributor. 90% of the time its the ignitor, but the shaft will go too. its not a matter of if but when. the CKP and SYNC sensors go bad all the time too. to do the job disconnect the connector into the distributor, take off the cap. make a mark on the distribor as to where the rotor is at, if you have a bad memory, take off the hold down bolts. the distributor will pop out without much effort. remove the rotor and put it onto the new distributor, one screw should be all there is to that. install or sync the new distribor with the rotor facing the same direction as the rotor was on the old distributor. its only possible to be off by 180 degrees. scew in the holddown bolts, throw on the cap and connector and youre done. time it, make sure timing is within spec. rebuilts are crap and they often dont time right due to rebuilt pickup positioning, highly recommend new.
