Default Crower 62403's(stage 2) in a b20

I'm in the process of building a b20 non vtec and i am putting in crower cams. I want to know if these will work without the spring and retainer kit. I currently have a automatic 3rd gen integra and won't be able to swap it to a 5 spd for a while so until then do you think i need aftermarket springs and retainers b/c with the automatic there is no way i will be going past the 6800 rpm redline even if i wanted to. I don't have the money right now for the springs and retainers or i would get them. Anyone else have these? and if it matters he is what else is done to the b20: cai, dc 4-1 w/ 3 inch collector, 3inch high flow cat, 2.5 inch exhaust, bored to about 2020cc's for my 84.5mm endyn (wiesco) 11.5:1 pistons and LS intake manifold and JE 65 mm throttle body

thanks

did you already get the cams? if not i sugest you step up to the 404's, i have them in my ls and they make pretty good power. but i havent been to a dyno yet to im sure i can squese (sp) more hp out of em. and for you question you do need the dual valve springs and retainers.

yeah i've already got the 403's. This is just gonna be a daily driver for now and i'll probably end up doing a b20 vtec sometime down the road when i get more money but for now i just got the cams cause they are cheap compared to the vtec ones and will make good enough power until i can afford todo more. The 404's i've heard don't idle as well either, not that they don't make good power but, this isn't a track car... well yet atleast

Yes, it's exactly the same head except that the cams are a bit diff. 403 will be fine w/ stock internals. but I suggest you wait to get the 404 cams & valetrain upgrade unless u got them already. trust me on this. save up for a sk2 manifold too!

Compared to other cams (Crane and Web), Crower cams tend to be on the wild side for a given 'stage'. So when they say the springs need to be upgraded, they probably should. By the way, I would be interested to see how they work. I was not too impressed with the dyno for this cam on the Crower website (loss compared to stock until 5500RPM). But that was on a B18. They might work better on a B20.

It is proven that the Crower cams are more prone to breaking than other pieces (there is the argument of install quality, but still). I just wonder if Crane cams are durable, if tehy made a slight bit less power but were more durable, I would consider them the bargain.

ya and those B20 cylinders will be cracking after 500 miles!

Seriously though, you may not want to put 404's on an automatic, because of idle problems, unless an auto will let you idle at 800 - 1000 rpms. Im only using an inner spring kit for my B20 build with 404's an the 7000 rpm redline (depending on whether or not she will breathe higher than that)

well i decided to go ahead and just get a spring and retainer kit, However the car won't be going back together for atleast another week now because i just realized i have the wrong pistons. i ordered 84mm low na compression pistons(11.5:1) and i got 84.5mm high na compression pistons(13:1) i've known they where too big for a while now but i was gonna just bore the block and put them in anyways. then the other dayi realize they are 13:1 and there is no way those are going in my car. so this just delays things more... ugh anyways i'll have some dyno numbers in like 2-4 weeks here is kinda what i am expecting tho bases on similar set ups

More radical does not always mean more power. If you take a look at the Crower websit, the 62403 does not produce any more peak power than Web's mild cam. And Web accomplishes this without the massive hit to low end torque that you would suffer with the 62403.

Peak power does not tell the whole story. The area under the curve does.

i ran the 403's with stock springs and retainers for a few months before getting the dual valve springs.........i belive it was just fine with the stock redline.............but i highly recommend you get the springs regardless............
