Do a leakdown test to narrow down the problem before you take it apart.

Do your leakdown test by applying 100 psi of air into the cylinder while the cylinder is on it's compression stroke at TDC, make sure all your spark plugs are removed. While the air is in the combustion chamber do the following steps:

1. Remove radiator cap and look for bubbles, if you see bubbles then your headgasket is bad.

2. Put your ear next to the cylinders on each side of the one you're testing, if you hear air seeping through then your head gasket is bad.

3. Remove air filter, if you hear air, then you have either a sticky intake valve or broken valve spring.

4. Put ear near exhaust pipe, if you hear air then it's sticky exhaust valve or broken valve spring.

5. Remove oil cap, if you hear air, then you have bad piston rings.

Edit: I haven't done a leakdown test in many many years, so if I missed something, then feel free to correct me.

Awsome explanation of the leak down test, I've always wondered what it was also. Is there a way to replace rings without taking the block out of the car?

How do you know it's not a bad piston?

How about this... If you hear it from your oil cap, it could also be a bad piston.
