basically, i have a 96 ek with a b16. when i first had to smog it for registration, i brought it to a friend and they took care of it. dont know how, dont wanna know how. and now i have to smog it again since its been 2 years. this time he calls me back and says that it didnt pass (which i had a feeling it wouldnt) since i added a header, exhaust system and other stuff...

but..i thought you couldnt smog a car with a swapped motor. like, its just not possible cuz of the motor and ecu and vin numbers or whatever and stuff like that. or is it possible to smog as long as the smog person is cool about it?

Your friend helped you out big time. The first time that is. You should BAR it.

He can get into big trouble and lose his license. Unless it was a simple mistake??

Have your friend help you getting the required emission stuff and do it right.

Then you will not have to go through this again in two years. Unless you like too.

The law states that you can swap motors in that were offered for that year in that model. These can be smogged at a regular smog check station.

If you have swaped a motor that is not offered for that year/car then you should be referred to the ref/BAR.

No. The smog rules that i know of (and my knowledge is limited) says the engine has to be the same year as the vehicle its going into, or newer. I.E. you can put a 1997 B16 into an 88 hatch and possibly not have any problems, but you can't put an 88-91 SiR 2 B16 into a 94 Del Sol. That and some states only sniffer test the car, but don't inspect the hardware on the car, unless you have a CEL. But I've also heard that states like Cali and Arizona check for aftermarket/non-stock components, and if anything like that is on the car, automatic failure, unless it has a CARB exempt number. JRSC kits, AEM cold air kits, and some of the DC Sports headers have exemption tags on them.

I agree with smogman. Get the parts or whatever you need, and do it right. I can't move to Cali, cause my car would never pass the smog cops, and i'm too cheap to want to put a $650 converter on my car. Another good idea(joke to follow)would be to move to a state that doesn't do smog checks, like my home state, The Big Mitten.

so to get the car BARd with a b16 in an ek hatch, the motor basically has to be bone stock, with all the emission requirements and it has to pass smog. i know im missing something cuz that seems too easy. also, i bet it cost a crap load to get it BARd. can you give me a general idea as to how to get the car BARd? thanks.
