VTEC was out in the early 80s in Japan on some of the Honda sport bikes, but its first use in a car was the 89 Civic/CRX SiR with the B16A

vtec was originally designed by honda for their formula 1 engines after turbos were banned in the early 80's. the first vtec production cars arrived in 1988 in the integra RSi/XSi later for the civic and crx. vtec didnt make into bikes (as far as i know) till last year when they developed it for their blackbird bike.

VTEC was introduced to America in the NSX in 1990, but in Japan was already in the Integra(89).

i think the 1st variable lift valvetrain was on a Porsche in the 60's or 70's. i know it wasn't called VTEC but it was still variable lift.

Actaully, being a Porsche Tech myself. Porsche's variable valve trick, called variocam, was an adjustment to overlap, valve timing, not lift. Its similar to BMW's Vanos. Only now with Porshce's Varicocam plus did they incorperate variable lift into the equation
