Default cleaning up a new flywheel.

Anyone know the proper way of getting some rust off of a flywheel surface? The flywheel is brand new, but has just been sitting around so long it picked up some rust. Would I have to resurface it or is there another alternative? Thanks.

make sure to thoroughly clean the flywheel if using any type of oil to clean the rust

you don't want any oil to be on the friction surface

uh, you do NOT want to use any oil on a cast iron flywheel.

The material is porous and will absorb into the metal.

Honestly, rust on a fresh flywheel isnt even that bad, it will turn into dust once you start driving. You will quickly wear into the fresh metal.

If you really want to clean it, use something like brake cleaner.

You guys are NUTS for using oil on a flywheel to clean it

Dont tell me you use WD-40 to get rust off your brake rotors also

after 7 years and 5 cars it doesnt seem to work too badly, milage on the clutches varies from 50k to 140k before replacement.

im glad it works for you

it is still a no-no for all professiona mechanics

You can pee around the bathroom toliet for 7 years in 5 different bathrooms... just because it works doesnt mean it is the right way to do it.

But, it is your car, your oil, your way of doing things

However, when someone asks a question, i try to give an informed answer that has an explaination.

I pee in the toliet because it goes down the drain instead of on my bathroom floor.
