Default Cleaning question

I just bought a used d16y8 head. What would the best/safest way to clean the combustion chamber up without damaging the valve seals or valves?

a wire brush or wheel, just don't hit the deck surface, tape it up to protect it

I cleaned my friends cylinder head by putting the whole peice into a bucket of varsol and with a brush started to clean the cylinder ports/combustion chamber.

make sure you use the varsol that won't burn through rubber and wear gloves and face mask because the gas will mess you up after a while of cleaning it
